Valentine Lake: A Hidden Gem in Central Louisiana

Nestled deep in the piney woods of Kisatchie National Forest, Valentine Lake is a secluded campground that offers visitors a chance to connect with nature in a tranquil setting.

According to a local news report, built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the recreation area has become a beloved destination for camping enthusiasts, hikers, and anglers alike.

Jonny Fryar, one of the managers of Valentine Lake, said the campground has 14 sites available for camping, some of which are located along the lakeshore.

While there is no electricity or water at the sites, there is running water available in the nearby bathrooms. For those looking for a more primitive camping experience, Valentine Lake offers a peaceful and picturesque retreat.

One of the highlights of Valentine Lake is its trail system, which includes connections to the 25-mile-long Wild Azalea Trail, the longest hiking trail in the state. Whether you are interested in a leisurely stroll or a challenging hike, the trails at Valentine Lake offer something for everyone.

Bart and Karen Austin, travelers from Wisconsin, recently visited Valentine Lake and were struck by its beauty and tranquility. “This is a jewel,” Bart Austin said.

“Absolutely stellar, and I don’t wanna say a well-kept secret because when you say that, it’s no longer a well-kept secret,” Karen Austin added.

Valentine Lake is not only a great place to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but it also offers excellent opportunities for fishing.

The lake is stocked with Florida bass, and several fishing piers are available for visitors to use. Luis Wilson, a visitor to Valentine Lake, shared his experience of spending three hours waiting for sunset while taking pictures of the stunning scenery.

However, while Valentine Lake may be a hidden gem, it is not the only campground in the area. Private campground owners and operators in the nearby area offer a range of amenities and activities that are worth exploring as well.

By visiting these campgrounds, visitors can experience a different kind of camping adventure while supporting local businesses.

Valentine Lake is an excellent example of the natural beauty that Louisiana has to offer. Whether you are a seasoned camping enthusiast or a first-time visitor, Valentine Lake is sure to leave a lasting impression.
