Lightship, a burgeoning startup co-founded by Toby Kraus and Ben Parker, former Tesla employees, is gearing up to commence commercial production of its innovative electric recreational vehicles (RVs) in Broomfield’s Baseline Innovation District by the end of this year according to an article by The Denver Post.

The venture aims to infuse the RV market with cutting-edge technology reminiscent of their experiences at Tesla. The Lightship L1, the company’s flagship model, features a unique aerodynamic design with a canopy that adjusts between a lower “road mode” and a raised “camp mode.”

In camp mode, the vehicle transforms into a spacious camper that can accommodate up to six people and is equipped with all-electric appliances, including a dishwasher.

Designed to revolutionize the RV experience, the Lightship L1 offers a seamless integration of form and function.

The vehicle is equipped with an “infotainment” technology system, allowing users to manage the canopy and onboard systems through a mobile app or tablet.

Toby Kraus highlighted the trailer’s electric powertrain, boasting an 80 kilowatt-hours battery capacity, which enables the trailer to propel itself, maintaining the towing vehicle’s efficiency.

He also emphasized the inclusion of highly efficient solar panels that generate up to 3 kilowatts of power, akin to a small home solar installation.

The industry has been stagnant for decades, according to Ben Parker, co-founder and Chief Product Officer of Lightship.

He criticized traditional power sources like gas or propane generators for detracting from the outdoor experience. The company’s innovation is poised to redefine perceptions of mobility in nature, catering to the growing demographic of young RV enthusiasts.

With over 11.2 million RV owners in the U.S. and a notable increase in ownership among 18- to 34-year-olds, the market is ripe for transformation.

Lightship’s designs promise a significant reduction in drag and enhanced aerodynamics, which were emphasized during a demonstration at the company’s 30,000-square-foot facility.

Since its inception in 2020, Lightship has expanded to 80 employees and raised $34 million in Series B financing. The company also benefits from strategic investments by industry giants like THOR Industries

This expansion is complemented by a strong community presence, as demonstrated by a recent visit from the All Electric Family, a group of RV enthusiasts, who were impressed by the prototype’s automotive-like aesthetics.

Looking forward, Lightship is focused on testing and refining their designs to ensure reliability and performance under various conditions.

As they prepare for the launch of their groundbreaking product, the RV industry watches closely, anticipating a shift towards more sustainable and innovative outdoor travel solutions.
