New Campground at Green Castle Set to Welcome Visitors in 2025

Green Castle Recreation Area in Marshall County, Iowa, is progressing towards the completion of Phase I of its campground project, which is anticipated to open in spring 2025. The project aims to transform the 16-acre lake and surrounding natural areas into a modern outdoor destination.

The project has received substantial financial support, including a $400,000 Destination Iowa grant awarded on March 10, 2023, and $718,000 in federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

According to an article published by Times Republican on October 5, phase I introduces 14 new camper sites, including two ADA-compliant sites with paved surfaces for individuals with mobility challenges.

A new shower house and restroom facility have been constructed. Guests will also benefit from the camper waste dump station near the west gate. The development plans for new trees, playground and camper area fire rings

Planning for Phase II, led by Clapsaddle Garber Associates, is already underway. The contract for Phase II is expected to be finalized this winter, with construction scheduled for 2025.

The project emphasizes accessibility, with plans for an ADA-compliant playground currently in the fundraising stage.

According to its website, in 1977, the Marshall County Conservation Board acquired a 116.5-acre tract of land, which features a 16-acre lake now known as Green Castle Recreational Area. This scenic area is characterized by rolling landscapes with native prairie, evergreen trees, and hardwood trees.

Green Castle offers a variety of day-use facilities, hiking trails, an astronomy observatory, and a small wildlife exhibit, making it an attractive destination for nature enthusiasts and families alike.

Additionally, several new fishing jetties were constructed alongside the installation of a boat ramp at the southern end of the lake, providing easy access for canoes and kayaks, and further encouraging recreational fishing and boating.

The recreational area also includes three shelter houses that offer picnic facilities with views of the lake. These shelters operate on a first-come, first-served basis, with the exception of the Gander Lookout shelter, which can be reserved for a fee.
