A couple from Chesterton, Indiana is once again trying to build an RV resort along U.S. 20, this time on 50 acres near the Tremont Road intersection in Porter.
The project has received a favorable response from Porter town officials and a neighbor, a report said. However, the project is in its early stages.
The couple (Trevin and Kimberly Fowler) and their Third Coast Cottage LLC were unsuccessful in gaining approval last year when they proposed a 5-acre RV resort at Kemil Road and U.S. 20 in Pine Township. The plan was opposed by the neighbors and the Porter County Board of Zoning Appeals.
Kimberly Fowler presented the plans for the new project at the Town of Porter’s Plan Commission meeting on Wednesday. Fowler informed the commission that they envision turning the land into a “legacy property.”
Fowler will be back next month with a more specific proposal, which will be part of the Planned Unit Development zoning plan for the property. The commission would then conduct an open hearing before deciding on their recommendation. If the commission’s vote is positive, then the Porter Town Council would make the final decision.
Third Coast Cottage LLC has an option to build on 50 acres located at the southeast corner of Tremont Road and U.S. 20.
There’s a barn, house, as well as storage buildings on the property. Fowler explained that they plan to improve the condition of these buildings before incorporating them into the park. She also suggested an event space as well as a gift shop and restaurant.
Other facilities for the grounds include a swimming pool, pickleball courts, a dog park, mini-golf, as well as a pumpkin and flower farm.
If the plan goes forward, it will be built in two stages. The first would consist of the construction of 83 RV parking spaces and the development of structures like the barn event center, the clubhouse, office, store, bathhouse, and pool.
Fowler explained that after that first part is complete and running, the next phase would consist of an addition of 71 RV parking sites.
The town’s Technical Advisory Committee had analyzed the plan and made a positive recommendation earlier in November. The committee also recommended that there be an investigation of the impact on traffic on Tremont Road.
