Ferne Clyffe State Park to Celebrate 75th Anniversary with Community Event

Ferne Clyffe State Park in southern Illinois will mark its 75th anniversary with a public celebration on Saturday, September 21. The park will host a series of activities, including guided hikes, fishing, rock-climbing demonstrations, and a commemorative ceremony.

The park, located just a mile south of Goreville, was first purchased by the State of Illinois in 1949 due to its natural attractions, which have continued to draw visitors for decades.

According to an article published by Metropolis Planet, in the park’s early days, visitors could travel by train from Goreville to reach the site for just 10 cents, and church services were even held at the Hawk’s Cave shelter bluff.

Though those practices have ceased, the park remains a popular draw, now attracting over 325,000 visitors annually.

Park superintendent Jay Massey emphasized the enduring appeal of Ferne Clyffe, highlighting its natural beauty and the variety of outdoor activities available for visitors. “It’s a privilege to experience Ferne Clyffe every day as part of my job, to get to know the many visitors who come back to explore it time and again, and to be here to help celebrate 75 years of offering unique outdoor experiences,” Massey explained.

The celebration on September 21 will begin with a series of guided hikes at various times throughout the day, starting at 8:30 a.m. and continuing into the afternoon. Other scheduled activities include free youth fishing, rock climbing, and vendor exhibits.

A special ceremony featuring guest speakers is also planned for 11 a.m. at the Buck Creek picnic area. Commemorative anniversary coins will be sold, with food available from the Goreville High School Beta Club.

Ferne Clyffe State Park, known for its unique geological formations and abundant ferns, spans 2,470 acres. It is a location for outdoor enthusiasts, offering hiking, camping, and rock climbing across 150 routes on eight distinct climbing walls.

The park also serves as a hub for campers, offering various camping options, including 59 Class A campsites at Deer Ridge Campground, as well as Class C and equestrian sites. The River-to-River Trail passes through the park, adding to its appeal for horseback riders and long-distance hikers.
