DNREC Proposes Campground Upgrades at Cape Henlopen to Improve Visitor Experience

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) is seeking public feedback on proposed changes to the campgrounds at Cape Henlopen State Park. The DNREC conducted a virtual workshop on November 13 at 6 p.m. to discuss the proposed updates. The improvements are part of several capital projects funded by recent federal grants.

The proposed campground changes are intended to enhance the safety, accessibility, and overall experience of visitors to the park. DNREC has outlined several updates, including upgrades to water, wastewater, and electrical utility networks throughout the campground. There are also plans for expanding some areas of the campground, adding three-point hookups and pull-through camping spaces.

According to an article published by WBOC Delmarva News Leader, another aspect of the plan includes the introduction of a full-service cottage area, providing new camping opportunities. Additionally, DNREC proposes relocating the Youth Primitive Camping area to a new site.

In addition to campground changes, DNREC is considering broader improvements to Cape Henlopen State Park. These proposed changes include a new park office, enhancements to the Fort Miles Museum, new walking trails, improvements to the fishing pier, and the construction of a new bathhouse.

The workshop presentation is available for viewing, and feedback can be submitted via an online survey, which will remain open until November 24.

According to its website, Cape Henlopen State Park offers a wide range of amenities and activities for visitors. The park features a bait and tackle store, bathhouse, and picnic areas, along with beach wheelchairs, chair and umbrella rentals, and a retail store.

Guests can enjoy a variety of recreational options, including biking, fishing, hiking, and geocaching. The park also provides opportunities for paddlesports, surfing, and swimming, while educational programs, summer camps, and special events like beach weddings are available. With its nature center, fishing pier, trails, and disc golf course, the park offers both relaxation and adventure for all ages.

The campgrounds at Cape Henlopen, Killens Pond, Lums Pond, and Trap Pond State Parks are open year-round, offering camping opportunities throughout the seasons. Additionally, the Cottages at Indian River Marina remain available year-round. The campground at Delaware Seashore State Park is also open year-round, though during the winter months, it accommodates only self-contained units.
