Sand Gulch Campground, in the Shelf Road rock climbing area in Cañon City, Colorado, announced opening on March 1. This reopening comes after a significant expansion project aimed at increasing site availability and enhancing the overall visitor experience.
Managed by the Royal Gorge Field Office, this development reflects a response to the growing demand for outdoor recreation in the area. Since 2000, the Shelf Road rock climbing area has experienced a notable increase in visitation, with numbers rising by approximately 50%.
“The Shelf Road area provides outstanding recreation experiences. We’re excited to be able to accommodate the growth and interest in this area while protecting resources and caring for the area,” Kalem Lenard, Royal Gorge Field Office assistant field manager, said, as quoted in a press release.
The expansion project has effectively doubled the number of available camping sites at Sand Gulch. Additionally, the project introduced new amenities, including picnic tables and fire rings, significantly expanded the parking capacity, and installed four new vault toilets. These improvements are designed to enhance the camping experience, providing greater comfort and convenience for visitors.
“When we charge a fee, the revenue generated stays within the management area where it was collected. This project is an excellent example of what can be done with increased resources,” Keith Berger, Royal Gorge Field Office manager, said.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to upgrade its recreational facilities. In 2019, the Bank campground, also located within the Shelf Road rock climbing area, underwent a similar renovation.
Reservations for the new Sand Gulch Campground can be made through the official website, recreation.gov. This system allows visitors to secure their camping spots in advance, ensuring a smooth and organized visit.
