Road Improvements Could Lead More Campers to Buffalo Pass Campgrounds

A plan to enhance 7.5 miles of Buffalo Pass Road is currently in the final stages of approval, Michael Woodbridge, the top ranger for the Hahns Peak, Bears Ears Ranger District (Colorado) told a local report.

Funding and improving the road between Dry Lake Campground and an area just outside Summit Lake Campground could start in the coming months.

In addition, the project will allow the U.S. Forest Service to rebuild some dispersed campsites throughout the area that have become unsustainable.

Buffalo Pass is one of the closest and well-known access points from Steamboat Springs, with Dry Lake Campground being frequented throughout the year. Woodbridge stated that the Forest Service is looking to set up a trail camera to understand the amount of use better.

“We’re certainly continuing to look at the Buffalo Pass area and the intense use up there [for] camping,” Woodridge said. “The Buff Pass Road decision will kind of change the dynamic up there.”

Once the roadway is a smoother drive, it could encourage the use of high-elevation developed campgrounds at Summit Lake and Granite. However, it can also spur an increase in the use of both official and non-official campgrounds.

“I think that we will be looking at our options of designated dispersed camping or another campground,” Woodbridge said.

One problem that has emerged is that people stay longer in Forest Service campgrounds, sometimes over the 14-day limit. As people stay for more extended periods, they create more waste, and their effects on the environment are amplified, Woodbridge said.
