Morro Bay Ends Waterfront RV Camping Program

Morro Bay (California) is scrapping a pilot program permitting RV camping along the Morro Bay waterfront after it angered residents.

The city council voted 4-1 on Tuesday to adopt language into its code that will stop the program established in 2020, according to a report.

Through the program, RV parking and tent camping in designated spots with views of the bay and Morro Rock were allowed for $65 to $75 per night.

The council is expected to incorporate the language from the citizens’ initiative into the municipal code.

The new ordinance will not allow RV and tent camping along Embarcadero Road, including Tidelands Park, Coleman Drive, and Morro Bay parking areas.

The new ordinance doesn’t affect private campgrounds like Morro Dunes RV Park, located at 1700 Embarcadero Road.

The city launched the pilot program to raise the needed funds for the Harbor Department that is estimated by Morro Bay officials to be underfunded by “approximately $600,000 to $800,000 per year over the next ten years,” as per the staff report.

The Morro Bay camping initiative has gone through several iterations, with the city having previously closed locations like three parking spots along Coleman Drive that generated numerous public complaints.
