Bright Angel Point Trail Closure for Repairs Starts June 21 at Grand Canyon’s North Rim

The Bright Angel Point Trail on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park will be closed to all pedestrian traffic starting June 21 due to an extensive repair project. This closure is essential for ensuring the safety of both staff and visitors and is scheduled to last until November 2024.

The National Park Service (NPS) has announced that the closure is necessary for replacing asphalt, moving large rocks, and operating heavy equipment along the trail. During this period, visitors are prohibited from accessing the trail to prevent any accidents or injuries.

The NPS strongly advises visitors to adhere strictly to designated trails and avoid attempting to bypass any closures, as per the Service’s news release.

“The safety of our staff and visitors is our top priority,” stated an NPS spokesperson. “We understand this may cause some inconvenience, but these repairs are crucial for maintaining the trail’s integrity and safety.”

For updated information on the project and current trail statuses, visitors are encouraged to check the park’s website at NPS Grand Canyon North Rim or stop by the Roaring Springs Overlook Kiosk. Schedules and closures may be subject to change depending on weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances.

The Bright Angel Point Trail, a popular scenic viewpoint located just a quarter mile from the Grand Canyon Lodge, is often the first stop for visitors arriving at the North Rim. Despite this trail’s closure, other scenic viewpoints along the Transept Trail and North Rim Scenic Roads will remain accessible throughout the duration of the construction project.

In 2023, nearly 130,000 people visited Cleland Wildlife Park, reflecting the high visitor engagement with natural attractions. Similarly, the Grand Canyon National Park sees significant visitor traffic, with the Bright Angel Point Trail being one of the key attractions on the North Rim.

The construction project highlights the ongoing efforts of the NPS to preserve and enhance the Grand Canyon’s infrastructure, ensuring that the park remains a top destination for nature enthusiasts. These efforts include not only trail maintenance but also broader initiatives to protect and manage the park’s diverse ecosystems.

This substantial investment reflects the state’s dedication to preserving its natural heritage while enhancing the recreational opportunities available to both residents and tourists. The improvements aim to ensure that South Australia’s national parks continue to be treasured havens for wildlife and popular destinations for nature enthusiasts.

By maintaining and improving park facilities, the NPS aims to provide safe, enjoyable experiences for visitors while preserving the natural beauty and ecological integrity of the Grand Canyon.
