Alaska’s Russian River Campground Reopens for Winter Use After Improvements

The Russian River Campground in Alaska has reopened for nonmotorized winter recreation following an extended closure due to construction work. The Chugach National Forest made the announcement on social media, confirming that access to the popular site had been restored, with reservations for the Barber Cabin also available.

The campground is a destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing. According to an article published by Homer News, the reopening comes after a closure that began in August to facilitate extensive roadwork aimed at improving access and protecting the environment.

The construction project focused on reconstructing a mile-long stretch of road within the campground. According to the Forest Service, the work included building new retaining walls, expanding road shoulders, and installing new surface and guardrails. These upgrades are designed to enhance visitor safety and reduce hillside erosion.

Although the campground is now accessible, it will close again on March 1 to resume construction.

According to its website, the Russian River Campground features 83 campsites, paved roads, and spurs but does not provide utility hookups. The campground charges $23 for single sites and $33 for double sites, with a non-refundable service fee applied to each reservation made through Recreation.gov.

Campground amenities include potable water, flush toilets, picnic tables, fire pits, and dumpsters, making it a convenient option for those seeking a rustic camping experience near the scenic Russian River.

Meanwhile, visitors planning to access the Aspen Flats and Upper Russian Lake Cabins should note a change in trailhead access. Although these cabins remain available for reservations, the usual route via the Lower Russian Lakes trailhead is currently inaccessible. Instead, hikers and cabin visitors can reach the cabins by using the trailhead at Snug Harbor Road.
