Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV) and the Erwin Hymer Group have announced a strategic partnership aimed at producing 6,000 VW Crafter vans as base vehicles for campervans by 2024.
This collaboration between two industry giants is expected to offer high-quality, versatile campervan options for both beginner and experienced RV enthusiasts, according to a report by Camping Trade World.
The agreement, signed by Erwin Hymer Group CEO Alexander Leopold and VWCV board member Lars Krause, demonstrates the commitment of both companies to provide cutting-edge recreational vehicle options for consumers.
The Crafter panel van, which serves as a benchmark in its class, offers ample space and flexibility for a wide range of campervan solutions.
Lars Krause expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, “We are delighted to have gained the Erwin Hymer Group as a new partner that will offer its own camping solutions using our vehicles as the basis.”
“The Crafter panel van offers plenty of space and great flexibility for a wide range of solutions, making it the ideal starting point for our collaboration. We are also looking forward to discussing further projects for other vehicles, such as the Crafter chassis and T6.1 successor,” he said.
“With the Crafter as a base vehicle, we are in an even better position to meet the strong demand for powerful and compact camper vans. Furthermore, we can very well imagine joint projects with our partner VWCV in areas such as alternative drive systems, for example,” said Leopold, sharing similar sentiments.
This partnership comes at a time when the caravanning and camping industry in Europe is experiencing significant growth. Campervans have been at the center of this trend. In 2020, 44% of motorhome registrations were campervans, a figure that increased to 54% in 2022.
By joining forces, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and the Erwin Hymer Group aim to meet the growing demand for high-quality campervans.
