Proposed Glamping Pods at Former Chichester Watercress Farm Await Council Decision

A former watercress farm in Chichester could soon transform into a glamping site, according to a proposal submitted to the Chichester District Council. The site, located at Spring Farm in Newells Lane, West Ashling, operated as a watercress farm for over 100 years before ceasing operations in 2023 due to rising operational costs.

Chichester District Council is set to decide on the proposed glamping pods by October 31.

The proposal, submitted by IRUK Waste Planning and Consultancy Ltd (IRWPC) on behalf of the landowner Edward Scales, outlined plans to convert the site into a tourist accommodation featuring six glamping pods. These pods would offer short-term holiday stays during school holidays and bank holiday weekends from March to May, and October to December, with full-time operation planned from June to September.

Each of the six proposed glamping pods would be “self-contained, high-quality” units designed to accommodate two adults. The pods would feature kitchen and bathroom facilities, with private outdoor areas that include woodfired hot tubs. “The proposed development is of a small scale and has been designed to be responsible in its management of the environment and local amenity,” IRWPC stated.

According to an article published by The Argus, two of the retained watercress beds also will remain in use, with watercress available for sale at the site and for purchase by glamping guests. The remaining beds will be transformed into wildlife ponds.

To minimize disruption to nearby residents, the plans include specific site rules, such as restrictions on external amplified music and controlled lighting. These measures aim to protect the peace and character of the surrounding area while ensuring guests enjoy a tranquil experience.

If approved, the glamping site would create employment opportunities, with two full-time and three part-time seasonal positions available.
