New Accommodation Development Approved in Peebles to Attract Tourists

Peebles, a town in the Scottish Borders, is set for a major tourism boost following the approval of a significant redevelopment project at Rosetta Caravan Park.

The plan, proposed by Darwin Escapes, aims to transform the existing site into a modern holiday destination. Located on Peebles’ northwestern outskirts, the development site received unanimous backing from the local council executive committee.

The proposal includes the construction of 100-holiday lodges and the renovation of a category B-listed stables building. The redevelopment plan also includes 70 of the new units being available for short-term rentals.

The remainder will be offered for sale as private holiday homes, aiming to attract diverse visitors and potential long-term investors. While specific details about the lodges’ amenities are not yet available, they are expected to meet Darwin Escapes’ high standards for luxury accommodation.

Tweeddale West Councilor Viv Thomson expressed support for the project, stating, “There’s a call for more accommodation to bring tourism into the area, and I think this has a good basis. It’s going to provide accommodation that we can bring people in to do cycling and everything.” Thomson also noted concerns about potential traffic increases.

“I know the site had permission for 260 caravans but it hasn’t been functioning on that level for quite some time. In the mix you’ve also got [new housing development] March Street Mill, ” Thomson noted.

Derek Inglis, the council’s roads planning chief, also provided reassurance regarding traffic concerns. He explained that holiday traffic typically doesn’t coincide with peak traffic times in the same way residential traffic does.

Tweeddale West Councilor Eric Small voiced support for the project, stating, “I think this will be good for the local area. I think it will be good for the tourism that comes to the Borders. It’s a popular area, and this accommodation enhances it.”

He anticipates increased trade for local businesses, saying, “It will bring trade and business to the local shops, hotels and cafés.”

Tweeddale East Councilor Marshall Douglas, who chaired the meeting, also shared his enthusiasm, saying, “It has been a beautiful building and in the past it was well used when it was a bar and restaurant. It’s good that it’s going to come back into use and it will be of great value to the tourist offering in that part of Peebles.”
