Orchid Meadows, a nature reserve and glamping site near Tregaron in West Wales, is set to host its inaugural orchid fortnight from June 29 to July 14.
This event will feature up to 1,500 bloom heads of heath spotted orchids alongside lesser butterfly orchids and broad-leaved helleborines nearing their flowering period.
During the fortnight, members of the Lampeter Permaculture Group will conduct an orchid count, comparing the results with those from the previous year. This annual count is crucial for monitoring the growth of the orchid population at Orchid Meadows.
Guests staying at the glamping site can enjoy accommodations in a cottage, yurt, or glampavan. Orchid Meadows spans 25 acres and mirrors the environment of the nearby Cors Caron National Nature Reserve.
The site, managed with input from the South and West Wales Wildlife Trust, boasts flower-rich hay meadows, a wetland area with rare bog plants, a pond teeming with damselflies, and a newly planted wood of native broad-leaved trees.
Stephen Hounsham, the owner of Orchid Meadows, emphasized the importance of conservation.
“Whilst our orchids are not listed as scarce, no orchids can be described as common anymore due to modern methods of land management. We will do our best over the next few years to maximize the populations of these and other wildflowers on our land,” Hounsham said, as reported by The Ceredigion Herald Wales.
Hounsham also underscored that the orchid count will help determine their success. He explained that increasing wildflower populations will have a knock-on effect on the numbers of insects and farmland birds.
“We are a glamping site offering stays amidst nature, and this is what our guests want to see,” Hounsham added.
One of the glamping offerings is the Goldfinch Glampavan. According to its website, the site, originally a touring caravan from the 1980s, has been transformed into a unique glamping experience.
Repositioned near the orchard and decorated in the vibrant colors of the goldfinch, this glampavan offers a quirky yet comfortable stay. Available from May to September, it features a small double bed with full bedding and linen and an additional sleeping space for one child with a provided pillow.
The inside seating area includes a coffee table, and the glampavan is equipped with smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for safety.
Another aspect of the offering is the amenities. Guests can enjoy a covered cooking area equipped with a two-ring gas cooker, seating, and a full set of pans, crockery, glasses, cutlery, and utensils. The site also features a Kadai firepit for barbecuing or toasting marshmallows, access to wood-fired pizza ovens, and complimentary logs, kindling, and fire-lighters.
