Over 12 Million Italians to go on Vacation this Month

Information gathered by Confturismo-Confcommercio Observatory suggests that 12 million Italians will pack up to go on vacation in September, signaling a healthy summer holiday for the European country.

Locally, about 9.9 million vacationers will see what the country has to offer when it comes to tourism. Meanwhile, 2.1 million Italians are set to travel abroad, as revealed in a report of CONFCOMMERCIO-Imprese per l’Italia relaying the results of Confturismo’s survey.

CONFCOMMERCIO is the Italian general confederation of enterprises, professional activities, and self-employment.

What the Numbers Say

Of those who prefer to travel within Italy, about 83% expressed visiting destinations in Tuscany, followed by Sardinia and Campania.

Meanwhile, foreign countries they said they will visit this month include Spain, France, Greece, and Croatia.

The respondents of the study conducted from August 25 through 30 shared that they want to take advantage of the summer season despite being concerned about the future.

Confturismo-Confcommercio Observatory forecasts that there will be about 30 million people who have gone on at least one vacation from June until the end of September, connoting “a positive September at the end of a summer season.”

In numbers, 4 out of 10 Italians will holiday this month, with a duration of 5 days and sea destination in 33% of cases. About 18% will go to the mountains, while cities of art, large cities, and small villages together form an additional 30% of destination preferences.

Knowing the Travelers

Spending per person is also looking good, with the average level of expenditure reaching 720 euros per person, ranging from almost 300 euros for a weekend up to over 1,280 euros for a holiday of a week or more.

The decision to leave in September seems to be a conscious choice, not a fallback or a constraint, the Confturismo said. Per the study, Italians—especially those aged 34-54m—seek to take a break to “disconnect”.

Moreover, traveling during the shoulder season when others won’t is what appeals to those over the age of 55.

Tackling inflation, surprisingly, only 14% of the respondents considered prices. Still, 11% stated that they have not been able to afford a holiday in the previous months due to high costs
