Croatian Campsites Gain Global Recognition at Germany’s Leading Camping Expo

Croatia is reinforcing its position as a premier camping destination at the REISE + CAMPING trade fair in Essen, Germany, where it is featured as the official Partner Country.

The event, which runs until February 23, gathers approximately 800 exhibitors and more than 80,000 visitors, making it one of the most significant gatherings for the camping and outdoor tourism sector.

The Croatian National Tourist Board (HTZ), alongside key industry leaders, is using the platform to promote the country’s diverse camping offerings to German travelers—Croatia’s most substantial source market.

Tonči Glavina, minister of Tourism and Sport, emphasized the importance of the German market, noting that “Germany remains our most important source market, providing the highest number of visitors to Croatia. That’s why we dedicate special attention to promoting our country here.”

For outdoor hospitality professionals, Croatia’s presence at the Essen fair highlights the country’s commitment to maintaining and expanding its reputation in the European camping sector.

With ADAC rankings placing Croatia second for camp quality and first for bathing quality, the nation continues to position itself as a leader in the high-end camping market.

This recognition, coupled with the ADAC Superplatz awards granted to 26 Croatian campsites, underscores the investment in quality infrastructure and services.

Kristjan Staničić, HTZ Director, outlined the sector’s continued growth, emphasizing the importance of upgrading facilities to meet evolving traveler demands.

“Camping is a vital segment of our tourism industry, distinguished by its high quality and ongoing investments in additional amenities such as wellness centers, sports facilities, and playgrounds,” he said in a report by The Dubrovnik Times

The strategic focus on quality enhancements aligns with broader industry trends, where experience-driven travel and sustainable tourism play an increasingly vital role in attracting visitors.

One of the key takeaways for outdoor hospitality operators is the growing importance of accessibility and service expansion.

Croatia’s proximity to key German regions, such as North Rhine-Westphalia, provides a competitive advantage, with many visitors arriving by car or camper.

Additionally, partnerships with operators like Misir Reisen, which brings approximately 25,000 German travelers to Croatia annually, highlight the opportunities for business collaboration and targeted marketing efforts.

The fair also featured the presentation of the Sustainable Business Award to Obonjan Camp, a recognition that aligns with the industry’s shift toward environmentally responsible practices.

As sustainability continues to influence consumer choices, Croatian campsites, and outdoor accommodation providers are leveraging these trends to enhance their appeal and attract eco-conscious travelers.

With German tourists accounting for over 20% of Croatia’s total overnight stays—7.7 million of which were in campsites last year—the country’s investment in its camping infrastructure and promotional efforts at international trade events signals a strategic approach to maintaining long-term growth in the outdoor hospitality sector.

For businesses operating in the camping and RV industries, Croatia’s success story offers insights into how quality improvements, sustainability efforts, and market-specific strategies can drive competitiveness in a dynamic tourism landscape.
