Parks Canada Invests $4.5M to Upgrade Passage Lookout at La Mauricie National Park

Parks Canada announced a CA$4.5 million federal investment to upgrade the Passage lookout at La Mauricie National Park in Quebec, a popular attraction known for its views of Wapizagonke Lake. The project aims to modernize the site while improving accessibility and sustainability.

According to a press release, Steven Guilbeault, minister of Environment and Climate Change and minister responsible for Parks Canada, confirmed the funding and emphasized the site’s significance.

“The Passage lookout is an emblematic site in the Mauricie region. This project will also include an interpretive trail on the history of the creation of the national parks system, designed to protect and present exceptional landscapes and natural environments across the country, including La Mauricie National Park,” Guilbeault explained.

After more than 40 years in operation, the existing lookout has reached the end of its service life. Parks Canada will rebuild the structure using sustainable materials while ensuring it blends into the surrounding environment.

The new design will improve accessibility, allowing more visitors to experience the park’s natural and cultural heritage.

According to Parks Canada, the modernization will enhance the viewing experience and provide educational opportunities. A boardwalk will guide visitors through the history of the national parks system and conservation efforts, culminating in a panoramic view of Wapizagonke Lake.

Established in 1970, La Mauricie National Park spans 536 square kilometers and is recognized for its ecological and cultural significance. The park holds historical importance for First Nations communities, including the Atikamekw and W8banakiak, who have long used the region’s waterways for travel, hunting, fishing, and gathering.

Parks Canada stated that the redesigned lookout will offer an immersive experience, highlighting Indigenous heritage and environmental conservation. The new structure aims to create a deeper connection between visitors and the landscape while ensuring long-term sustainability.

La Mauricie National Park attracts approximately 250,000 visitors each year. The upgraded lookout is expected to enhance the park’s appeal, drawing more travelers seeking nature-based experiences in Quebec’s protected areas.

Construction on the new Passage lookout is set to begin in spring 2025 and is scheduled for completion by late fall 2025. During this period, the lookout will be closed to the public.
