On Thursday, August 25, the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue and Member of Parliament for Gaspesie-Les Iles-de-la-MadeleineParks, on behalf of Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada has announced an investment of CA$4.3 million for the implementation of a project for the conservation, restoration, and presentation of the beaver ponds area of Forillon National Park (Quebec).
According to a press release, funded through Parcs Canada’s Conservation and Restoration Program, the project aims to restore ecological connectivity to the forest and waterways near a former section of Highway 132, by 2026.
The project includes asphalt and guardrail removal as well as the rehabilitation of 5.5 kilometers of the old road.
Soils and rivers will also be restored and rehabilitated, which will facilitate animal movement as well as the dispersal of the flora. About 15,000 native trees will also be planted in Forillon National Park as part of the project to improve ecological connectivity, purify the air, combat climate change and protect biodiversity.
Through the presentation of the beaver ponds area, residents and tourists will be informed of the vital role beavers play in crucial ecological processes that sustain an abundance of biodiversity.
In addition to meeting several goals of conservation and ecological restoration, the project will also offer Canadians and tourists alike the chance to experience the unique wetland environment while enjoying the benefits of outdoor physical activity and being surrounded by nature.
