As part of recovery efforts following hurricane Fiona that ravaged Prince Edward Island (Canada), provincial crews continue to clear large debris from roads and recreational spaces across the Island.
Prince Edward Island’s network of provincial parks features eight camping parks and 12 day-use parks with spectacular beaches.
The province announced the closure of all provincial park campgrounds and day areas last September 23.
In a press release, the provincial government urged residents to avoid provincial parks, Island trail systems, and other areas where power restoration and debris clean-up efforts are underway.
“For your own safety and the safety of the restoration crews, please stay away from trails and parks that are closed due to damage from [hurricane] Fiona,” Prince Edward Island Government reiterated in a Facebook post.
As per the release, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists are encouraged to avoid work sites or places where poles, lines, or debris can be considered a public safety risk.
As of October 12, provincial recovery efforts include power restoration and debris clean-up efforts, clearance of over 5,300 trees, and 160 roadways opened by the Canadian Armed Forces Taskforce since first arriving on September 25.
The province’s resources have also knocked on 555 Island doors to check in on residents, and a total of CA$7,291,000 has been issued to 29,166 Island households through the Canadian Red Cross as part of the one-time CA$250 provincial financial assistance.
The PEI government also emphasized that post-Hurricane Fiona restoration work is underway for homes and businesses in communities throughout the province, noting that Maritime Electric and their partners are continuously working to repair and replace electrical lines and poles, and school buses are back on the road.
As of writing, the Cavendish section of PEI National Park, starting from Graham‘s Lane, the Gulf Shore Parkway East from Brackley to Dalvay, including Robinson’s Island, Greenwich, Ardgowan National Historic Site Skmaqn – Port-la—Joye – Fort Amherst National Historic Site, and Green Gables Heritage Place – The Haunted Wood trail are closed, and more campgrounds are still closed until further notice due to the damage brought by hurricane Fiona.
