Enjoy Free Fishing and Provincial Park Access in Manitoba This Weekend

The Manitoba government has invited all Manitobans to take advantage of free access to provincial parks and the opportunity to fish without a licence since June 7. This initiative, which runs through to June 9, is designed to encourage outdoor recreation and family activities across the province.

According to a media release, throughout this weekend, anglers can fish anywhere in Manitoba, Canada without needing an angling license, except in national parks where a federal license is still required.

All other fishing regulations, including possession limits and size restrictions, remain in effect as outlined in the 2024 Manitoba Anglers’ Guide, available at www.manitobafisheries.com.

Additionally, vehicle permits are not required to visit provincial parks this weekend, although regular camping fees will still apply at provincial campgrounds.

Outdoor enthusiasts can greatly benefit from this initiative, as it offers a unique opportunity to explore Manitoba’s diverse natural landscapes and engage in recreational fishing without the usual permit requirements.

Whether you are an experienced angler or a family looking for a fun outdoor activity, this weekend provides a perfect chance to connect with nature.

A special highlight for visitors is the guided tours at Whiteshell Provincial Park, where park interpreters offer insights into the Whiteshell Fish Hatchery. These tours provide an in-depth look at how provincial fisheries staff raise various fish species and the evolution of fish stocking practices over the years.

The tours, featuring hundreds of thousands of trout in outdoor tanks, are available throughout the summer. For tour schedules and more information on provincial parks, visit www.manitobaparks.com.

Recreational fishing is more than just a pastime; it contributes to the physical and mental well-being of individuals by providing a peaceful and engaging activity. It also fosters an appreciation for the environment and the importance of conservation efforts.

Park visitors are encouraged to check for the latest conditions and any temporary closures or advisories. It is essential to verify fire restrictions and ensure that fires are made only in approved fire pits.

The Manitoba government also urges everyone to help protect the province’s water bodies from aquatic invasive species (AIS). To prevent the spread of AIS, all watercraft and related equipment must be cleaned, drained, and dried when removed from a waterbody. For more information on AIS prevention, visit www.manitoba.ca/stopais/spread/index.html.

This weekend offers an excellent opportunity for free recreational fishing and park visits while promoting the enjoyment and conservation of Manitoba’s natural resources.
