Wells Gray Provincial Park, located near Clearwater, British Columbia, is gradually reopening its gates to outdoor enthusiasts after a period of closure due to wildfire concerns.
The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) conducted an aerial survey of the park, revealing a reduction in fire activity. Rank 1, the lowest intensity level, is now the status for most fires within the park.
According to an article published by 100 Mile Free Press on July 29, BC Parks has reopened several campsites and trails within Wells Gray Provincial Park. Specific areas that have reopened include Indian Point on Azure Lake, Chain Meadows Trail, and Flat Iron Trail.
However, some areas are still closed, including Murtle Lake and Battle Mountain.
Tourism Wells Gray also announced on July 26 the reopening of the newly renovated and fully accessible viewing platform at Helmcken Falls in Wells Gray Park.
Executive director Claire Hanna highlighted BC Parks’ commitment to inclusivity within the park. “We’re incredibly happy to open the new viewing platform at Helmcken Falls. This project underscores BC Parks’ dedication to making Wells Gray Provincial Park an inclusive destination for all visitors,” Hanna said.
Designed with accessibility as a priority, the viewing platform now features resurfaced pathways from the parking area to the viewing platforms, fully accessible washrooms, and strategically placed picnic tables and benches with added space for mobility aids.
Hanna emphasized that this project is the first of two provincially funded initiatives by BC Parks to enhance park accessibility .“As this platform opens, it will bring new opportunities for tourism in our community and showcase the park’s natural beauty to an even broader audience,” she said, as reported by North Thompson Star/Journal.
While some backcountry areas, including Murtle Lake and parts of the Battle Mountain Area, remain closed due to recent wildfires, much of Wells Gray Park is still operational. Clearwater Valley Road, which provides access to Spahats, Dawson, and the newly renovated viewing area at Helmcken Falls, remains fully accessible.
Hanna reassured visitors that there are no wildfires along the main corridor and encouraged everyone to experience the park’s natural beauty.
