The City of Penticton is inviting residents to share their input on proposed plans for Lakawanna Park, a key recreational area known for its scenic beauty and family-friendly amenities.
Officials unveiled two design concepts aimed at enhancing the park’s appeal and accessibility, aiming to cater to a broader age range while preserving its unique charm. The consultation period includes opportunities for in-person feedback at “walkshops” held within the park, alongside an online platform to gather public opinion until November 13.
According to an article published by Castanet, Ysabel Contreras, Penticton’s parks planner, expressed excitement over the project, emphasizing the city’s goal to make Lakawanna Park even more enjoyable and accessible.
“Our proposed ideas aim to serve a wider age range while still preserving the park’s charm,” Contreras stated, highlighting the balance between modernization and maintaining the essence of the park. The city laid out two options for consideration, each with a unique approach to improving and expanding park amenities.
The first concept focuses on a reconfiguration of the existing park layout, designed to diversify its features without expanding beyond the current boundaries. This plan introduces more inclusive play areas and enhanced seating options, aiming to meet the needs of diverse age groups.
The second proposal suggests a phased expansion that would extend into a section of the adjacent parking lot. This approach would allow the addition of more varied play equipment and leisure spaces.
In addition to these design changes, both plans prioritize improved accessibility to ensure that the park remains welcoming to all visitors. The proposed upgrades feature broader paths, adaptable seating, and play equipment that can accommodate individuals with mobility challenges. This aligns with Penticton’s commitment to enhancing inclusivity within public spaces.
These “walkshops” will take place within Lakawanna Park on November 2 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and November 6 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., offering attendees the chance to explore the proposed layouts and share feedback.
