BCLCA to Hold Webinar, Town Hall Meeting to Discuss Cancellation Policies, Implementation

Emergencies in British Columbia (Canada), such as the COVID-19 pandemic, flooding, and wildfires, have resulted in higher than usual cancellation requests made by guests, members of the British Columbia Lodging and Campground Association (BCLCA) said.

According to BCLCA’s newsletter, a clear cancellation policy and its proper implementation can give members the advantage when responding to cancellation requests.

Failure to create or implement a firm policy could lead to guests having the legal right to terminate the contract and get a refund or result in disputes, legal issues, as well as unhappy guests.

Additionally, the British Columbia Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act (BPCPA) enforces diverse requirements on businesses.

In certain circumstances, it is possible that the BPCPA could give guests the option to cancel the reservation and get a refund, even if the member’s cancellation policy doesn’t permit it.

BCLCA has had legal firm Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP make a bulletin on cancellation policies to address this issue. The session will be hosted by BCLCA Directors Barry Burko of Whispering Pines RV and Tent as well as Mara and Tammi Midgley of Sheridan Lake Resort in Lone Butte.

They will look over the bulletin and build upon the presentation they gave last fall at the Ideas Forum as a result of legal advice received by the association.

Following the Cancellation Policy webinar, the program shifts to a Q&A cracker barrel hosted by Jamie Cox, BCLCA president. Together with other directors, they will answer operational questions asked by members.

The cracker barrel is interactive, with members raising their hands to pose questions and then responding with comments or answers to further discuss the topic.

It will be held on February 16, 2022, at 10:00 am.

Members are urged to register in advance for this webinar. To register, click here.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation e-mail that contains details about the town hall or webinar. An e-mail reminder will also be sent a week before and a day before the webinar happens.
