Jasper National Park Announces Reopening Plans, New Programs for Summer 2025

Jasper National Park is gearing up for the 2025 summer season with a range of camping and recreational opportunities, according to Parks Canada. The park, recovering from wildfire impacts, will offer a variety of frontcountry and backcountry camping options, alongside interactive maps to help visitors plan their trips.

Following wildfire damage assessments, critical restoration efforts have made it possible for most campgrounds to reopen. Parks Canada confirmed that Whistlers Campground, Jasper’s largest with 781 sites, will be fully operational.

According to a press release, Miette Campground will also reopen entirely, while Wapiti Campground will operate at reduced capacity. However, Wabasso and Whirlpool Group Campgrounds will remain closed for 2025.

Visitors can begin reserving campsites in January 2025. Additionally, self-registration campgrounds, including Snaring River and Wilcox, will offer extended seasons to enhance access.

Backcountry camping will see full availability for the 2025 season, supported by the Parks Canada Reservation System. Some trailheads, including Astoria and Wabasso Lake, remain under assessment, potentially affecting itineraries.

Jasper National Park will also present special programming in 2025 to align with the United Nations International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation. Highlights include interpretive sessions at the Columbia Icefield, where interpreters will educate visitors on the critical role of glaciers and watersheds.

In partnership with Guardians of the Ice, Jasper National Park will introduce an exhibit at the Icefield Centre Glacier Gallery.

The park plans to deliver free interpretive programs throughout 2025, featuring themes related to wildfire ecology and Indigenous-led sessions. These programs will be hosted at Whistlers Campground Theatre and other locations, providing visitors with engaging educational experiences.

Hazard removal, infrastructure repairs, and the restoration of essential services, such as emergency response and garbage collection, have enabled the reopening of many visitor areas. Parks Canada highlighted its collaboration with local tourism partners and the Municipality of Jasper to ensure a safe and enjoyable visitor experience.
