WA Government Announces AU$6M Package to Revive Kimberley Tourism Hit by Floods

The Western Australian Government has announced a $6 million recovery package to support tourism operators in the flood-affected Kimberley region.

The package aims to help businesses that the recent floods in the region have impacted and to attract more visitors to the area in order to support local economies and boost the tourism industry, according to a report by Caravan Camping Sales.

The package includes a voucher program and discounted airfares, which will be delivered in partnership with Virgin Australia.

The discounted fares will be offered from $219 one-way between Perth and Broome and from $259 one-way from Perth to Kununurra within the travel window of March 27 to October 29, 2023. The fares will go on sale starting January 25th and will be available until allocations are exhausted.

In addition to the airfares and vouchers, the package also includes an ‘open for business’ marketing campaign to promote those parts of the region that are currently unaffected by the floods. The campaign will focus on highlighting the beauty and attractions of the Kimberley region, encouraging tourists to visit and support local businesses.

The $6 million funding package comes as the government urges holidaymakers to consider the Kimberley region, despite the recent floods,” said a Tourism Western Australia media release. “The package includes affordable airfares and a voucher program to help boost bookings for local tourism operators.”

“Popular tourism hotspots like Broome, Derby, Kununurra, and surrounding areas are still operational and ready to welcome visitors for the upcoming tourist season. The government encourages travelers to check with accommodation providers or tourism operators before changing travel arrangements.

The WA Government has stated that this package is an “initial response” to the flood impact and that further industry funding support may be made available in the future.
