Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to Conduct Planned Burns at Fraser Island

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (Australia) will be conducting prescribed burns within the K’gari (Fraser Island) part of the Great Sandy National Park.

As per a report, a burn near Dundubara QPWS base and campground is scheduled between April 20 and May 31, 2022, as part of the annual hazard reduction/conservation management program for parks and forests.

Due to the planned burning, smoke may be observed in Dundubara Campground and beach camping zones 6 (Eugarie, Yurru, Guruman) and 7 (Wyuna, Burad).

Smoke may also be visible within Orchid Beach township, Waddy Point camping areas, and beach camping zone 8 (Marloo, Ocean Lake, Duling).

QPWS said that these burns are to lower the volume of forest fuels and create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas.

“This will help reduce the intensity of any subsequent wildfires and provide favorable conditions for natural forest regeneration.

“Smoke can decrease visibility on the roads, so it is important that motorists drive safely to the conditions.”
