Frenchman Bay, a coastal area in Albany, Western Australia, is set to welcome its first major tourism development. The Regional Development Assessment Panel has approved plans for an AU$ 5 million resort.
The site’s background adds depth to this development. It was formerly occupied by a caravan park that operated until 2006. Since 2018, the location has been identified for redevelopment.
According to an article published by Albany Advertiser on October 7, the new resort will have the capacity for over 48 guests, offering various accommodation options. The development includes a lodge, six glamping tents, two single-story “bespoke barnyard retreat” units each containing four accommodations, and six two-story units. These diverse lodging choices cater to different preferences and group sizes.
The resort will also feature several amenities to enhance the guest experience and facilitate gatherings. These include a function space for more than 70 people, a sitting room, a studio that doubles as a fire refuge, an expansive deck, and a swimming pool.
Paul King, the property owner and former Tourism WA chair, shared his project vision. He described it as “a special site, deserving of a luxury retreat” due to its unique oceanfront location surrounded by national parks.
Environmental considerations were crucial in the approval process. The development must adhere to conditions protecting the area’s natural integrity, including comprehensive bushfire management and coastal erosion plans. The developers have also addressed concerns regarding water supply and sewage disposal.
The approval process involved significant community engagement. Initially, the Frenchman Bay Association raised concerns about water and sewage issues. These were resolved through dialogue between developers and the community.
The proposed AU$5 million resort in Frenchman Bay highlights the importance of offering glamping options to cater to diverse guest preferences. With accommodations ranging from glamping tents to bespoke units, the resort aims to attract a broad spectrum of visitors.
Additionally, engaging with residents to address their concerns is essential for facilitating a smooth approval process and fostering community support.
