Federal Government Allocates $10 Million for Caravan Park Upgrades Across Australia

The Australian federal government has announced a $10 million funding initiative to support upgrades at 110 caravan parks across the country, aiming to enhance tourism in regional areas and attract a broader range of visitors.

The funding is expected to modernize facilities and provide new attractions that cater to diverse demographics, including families and travelers with specific accessibility needs.

Among the projects receiving funding is a drive-in cinema at a Melbourne caravan park, alongside other enhancements such as accessible swimming pools, playgrounds, and upgraded recreational facilities.

A notable project includes refurbishing a pool in the Daintree Rainforest, which previously housed a four-meter saltwater crocodile named Doris, into a swimming area for guests.

Additional upgrades include a putt-putt golf course in Sutton, New South Wales, and a playground featuring a Tasmanian tiger statue in Strahan, Tasmania.

Tourism Minister Don Farrell emphasized the importance of these upgrades in sustaining regional tourism, which accounts for 90% of domestic caravan and camping trips.

“Tourism is the lifeblood of our local communities, and the classic Aussie holiday holds a lot of special memories for many Aussies and their families,” Farrell told ABC News

He added that the government’s investment would help local businesses enhance their offerings and ensure that the tradition of caravan park holidays remains appealing for future generations.

The upgrades come at a time when the industry faces challenges, including a decline in domestic camping and caravanning trips, partly attributed to an increase in international travel among older Australians.

Despite these trends, caravan parks continue to be a significant driver of the economy, contributing an estimated $13.9 billion annually through over 15 million trips to parks and campgrounds.

Stuart Lamont, CEO of the Caravan Industry Association of Australia, highlighted the transformative impact of the funding, noting its role in improving accessibility and inclusivity.

“This has been a real game changer for customers with unique needs,” Lamont said, referencing the installation of accessible camp kitchens, waterparks, upgraded campsites, and modernized cabins.

The government’s initiative underscores its commitment to bolstering regional tourism while fostering inclusivity and innovation within the caravan and camping sector.
