Philippine Farm Tourism Emerges as Attractive Destination for Outdoor Enthusiasts

Philippine farm tourism projects are flourishing, catering to the demand for sustainable and eco-friendly travel options.

Post-pandemic, farm tourism has emerged as an attractive destination for both local and international travelers who are eager to explore unique experiences and contribute to food security and environmental conservation efforts.

The growth in farm tourism, which has expanded from 50 establishments in 2017 to over a thousand in 2023, presents significant opportunities for the Philippines‘ outdoor hospitality industry.

As Mina Gabor, chairman and president of the International School of Sustainable Tourism (ISST), explained in a report by the Manila Times, farm tourism combines agribusiness and tourism, providing visitors with experiences that go beyond traditional farming practices.

This surge in interest creates a potential market for local businesses to offer accommodations, dining, and recreational facilities tailored to eco-conscious travelers.

Farm tourism sites allow visitors to engage in agritourism activities such as crop harvesting, livestock feeding, and fishing, as well as recreational pursuits like camping, hiking, and enjoying local cuisine—factors that appeal to backpackers, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

In the U.S., agritourism and outdoor recreation have seen success with businesses like Harvest Hosts and Hipcamp, which connect travelers to unique camping experiences on private land, including farms and vineyards.

Both Philippine farm tourism and U.S. agritourism emphasize sustainability, local culture, and immersive experiences, offering travelers alternatives to conventional accommodations and attractions.

ISST has witnessed a growing interest in farm tourism, with more students attending related courses during and after the lockdowns. These courses provide participants with the foundation needed to establish a successful farm tourism business, further contributing to the industry’s expansion.

According to Gabor, farm tourism distinguishes itself from traditional farming by offering a well-rounded travel experience. Visitors can enjoy homestays, farm-to-table restaurants, and picturesque flower gardens, which contribute to the destination’s appeal.

Notable farm tourism locations in the Philippines include Cebu, known as the “center of the flower farms,” Davao’s coconut farms, Cagayan de Oro’s horse and vegetable farms, and Baguio’s strawberry fields. These destinations showcase the potential of farm tourism to boost local economies and create unique experiences for travelers.

The pandemic has highlighted the importance of sustainable tourism, and as Gabor emphasized, “We can no longer return to our old ways of taking nature for granted.”

Farm tourism fosters a deeper appreciation for sustainability and eco-friendly practices, attracting environmentally conscious travelers worldwide.

With government agencies such as the Department of Tourism and the Department of Agriculture supporting farm tourism, the Philippines is poised to become an increasingly popular destination for international travelers, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking sustainable and immersive travel experiences.
