Eco Suites Australia is developing a new off-grid glamping retreat on Canberra’s Yarramundi Peninsula, with construction underway and the first guests expected to arrive in December 2026.
Called Eco Suites Canberra, the project will feature three six-meter glass geodesic domes overlooking Lake Burley Griffin. According to TimeOut, the development is the first overnight accommodation approved for construction on the shores of the heritage-listed lake.
The retreat is designed to combine hotel-style amenities with an off-grid accommodation model. Each dome will include a king bed, private ensuite with a rainfall shower, Wi-Fi, a streamcast TV, a Nespresso machine, complimentary minibar and breakfast basket. The units will also feature retractable glass rooftops intended to allow guests to stargaze from inside their accommodations.
The three suites are being given names connected to the Ngunnawal Custodians and the surrounding landscape. The first, Songlines, is planned to overlook Black Mountain and the sunrise across Lake Burley Griffin. Dyurra, which means stars, will face east toward the southern sky, while Ngurra, meaning camp, will provide views toward the Brindabella Ranges.
Eco Suites Australia says the property will operate independently of conventional utility infrastructure. The development is planned to use solar power and battery storage, along with sustainable water systems. For outdoor hospitality operators, the project illustrates one approach to pairing premium accommodation with off-grid infrastructure in a location close to an urban market.
The location may also be significant from a development perspective. Rather than placing guests in a remote rural setting, Eco Suites Canberra is being developed only minutes from central Canberra while still positioning the natural landscape and waterfront as key parts of the guest experience. This type of proximity can allow operators to target travelers seeking access to nature without requiring a lengthy journey from a city.
The project is also entering the market as demand for higher-comfort outdoor accommodations continues to influence glamping development.
Offering private bathrooms, permanent beds, climate and technology amenities, and views or nature-based experiences can position glamping units closer to the expectations associated with traditional hospitality while maintaining a distinct outdoor setting.
Construction of Eco Suites Canberra is currently underway, with the first guests expected to check in in December 2026. Bookings for the 2026/27 summer season are expected to open in November 2026, with rates starting at A$589 per night.
For operators considering similar developments, the project highlights several factors that can affect premium glamping investments, including access to urban demand, infrastructure requirements for off-grid operations, environmental considerations, and the ability to differentiate units through location and design.
