Goodland KOA Journey in Kansas is marking its 60th anniversary this year, reaching the milestone after six decades of serving campers, road trippers and families traveling along Interstate 70 in northwest Kansas.
The campground opened in 1966 as one of the original Kampgrounds of America (KOA) locations and was developed as part of KOA’s early effort to establish a network of campgrounds across North America.
Its location near Interstate 70 makes it an overnight destination for travelers moving through the region and a base for exploring northwest Kansas
Goodland KOA Journey originally featured an A-frame building that included a camp store, recreation space, showers and living quarters for campground owners. The property has undergone improvements over the years while retaining elements of its original campground setting.
“Celebrating 60 years is an incredible milestone and something our entire team is proud to be a part of,” Garrett Hammaker, general manager of Goodland KOA Journey, said in a press release.
“It represents six decades of welcoming travelers, building relationships and creating memorable experiences for families from all over the country. Many of our guests have stayed with us for generations, and it’s always special to hear stories from people who visited as children and are now bringing their own kids and grandkids,” Hammaker added.
The campground offers RV sites, tent sites and camping cabins, along with shaded campsites and campground facilities.
According to the press release, the campground has hosted thousands of guests from across the United States and other countries during its six decades of operation.
Ownership has changed over the years, while successive operators have continued efforts focused on accommodations, facilities and guest service.
Recent investments include upgraded camping cabins and other campground amenities intended to meet current camper needs while maintaining features familiar to returning guests.
Hammaker said the anniversary is also being used to look ahead.
“While we’re proud of our history, we’re equally excited about the future,” Hammaker said. “Celebrating 60 years isn’t just about looking back, it’s about honoring the people who made this campground what it is today while looking forward to serving travelers for many years to come.”
Goodland KOA Journey has also received KOA’s ICON Award, which recognizes campgrounds for guest experiences, as well as recognition tied to its Net Promoter Scores.
