Sugar Loaf Key RV Resort & Cottages in Summerland Key has received a 2026 Best Park Award from the Florida and Alabama RV Park and Campground Association, recognizing the resort for operational excellence, guest satisfaction, and engagement within the outdoor hospitality industry.
The award was presented April 30 during the association’s annual Outdoor Hospitality Convention & Expo at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando.
The recognition is given to parks that demonstrate high standards in business operations, facility maintenance, guest services, staff performance, and ongoing efforts to enhance the guest experience.
Sugar Loaf Key RV Resort & Cottages features 65 full-hookup RV campsites, including lakefront, premium, and cabana options.
The property also offers 35 vacation rentals consisting of 12 two-bedroom cottages with kitchenettes, 18 studio bungalows, and two Airstream rentals.
The resort’s vacation rental inventory has increased by 50% since the property originally opened in 2023. The expansion follows a redevelopment effort led by Blue Water Development Corp., which acquired the former Lazy Lakes RV Resort in 2021.
According to the company, Blue Water invested more than $14 million in the redevelopment of the property. Improvements included new roadways, a tiki structure, a renovated bathhouse, a renovated welcome center, an upgraded pool, utility infrastructure improvements, and landscaping throughout the seven-acre saltwater lake property.
The redeveloped resort opened to the public in October 2023. In April 2025, the property was rebranded as Sugar Loaf Key RV Resort & Cottages under Blue Water’s independent brand.
Since opening, the resort has continued to expand its accommodations, adding new cottages and Airstream rentals as part of the growth in its vacation rental inventory.
The resort is also preparing a summer schedule of guest programming. A themed weekend series called “Local Loafers” is scheduled to run throughout June, July, and August.
The series will begin with a Casino Night weekend in June, followed by Christmas in July festivities and a Halfway to Mardi Gras celebration in August. The Oasis Airstream Snack Shack is expected to participate in each themed weekend.
Additional programming plans include World Cup watch parties for matches played in Miami, giving guests opportunities to gather and watch games on the property.
Guests also have access to live music performances featuring regional artists, kayaking and paddleboarding on the resort’s seven-acre saltwater lake, a year-round pool, the Oasis Tiki Bar, and outdoor recreation opportunities through local partner organizations.
The Florida and Alabama RV Park and Campground Association, based in Tallahassee, serves as the trade association for privately owned RV parks and campgrounds in both states.
