Yellowstone National Park is extending its fishing season on three major rivers beginning this year, opening select waterways on the park’s west side weeks earlier than the traditional start of the season.
According to an article by East Idaho News, under the new schedule, anglers will be able to access portions of the Firehole River, Gibbon River and Madison River starting May 1, instead of waiting for the standard fishing season that typically begins on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.
The newly adjusted opening includes the Firehole River and all associated tributaries downstream to its confluence with the Gibbon River at Madison Junction.
It also applies to the Gibbon River and its tributaries from the bridge on the Grand Loop Road at the Norris Campground entrance downstream to Madison Junction.
In addition, the Madison River and associated tributaries from the Montana-Wyoming state line upstream to the junction with the Firehole and Gibbon rivers at Madison Junction will also be available for fishing beginning May 1.
Separate from this change, the Madison River segment stretching from the Montana-Wyoming state line downstream to the park boundary near the West Entrance in West Yellowstone, Montana, will continue to remain open to fishing year-round.
While the opening date is shifting earlier, the closing date for these river sections will remain the same.
Fishing on the Firehole, Gibbon and Madison rivers within these areas will still end on Oct. 31, aligning with the standard fishing season throughout the park.
Park officials note that temporary, partial or full fishing closures often occur later in the season on these rivers due to warmer water temperatures and reduced river flows.
The decision to open the rivers earlier is intended to better match fishing access with more favorable angling and water conditions in the spring, and officials have stated that no adverse impacts to the fisheries are expected as a result of this extension.
For anglers and visitors planning trips, Yellowstone continues to make water temperature and flow data available through the Water Data for the Nation platform, providing real-time information that can help guide safe and responsible fishing activity.
Most other fishing areas in Yellowstone will continue to follow the park’s standard season, running from the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Oct. 31 each year.
Additional details on fishing locations, regulations and required permits remain available on the park’s official website.
This update shows how Yellowstone’s seasonal access changes could extend the spring shoulder season for outdoor recreation visitors.
