Glamping Horizonte Maya, a new ecotourism development in Calderitas, Chetumal, Quintana Roo, is set to officially open on Friday, August 8.
The project represents an investment exceeding one million dollars from national entrepreneurs and aims to contribute to the development of the southern Mexican Caribbean as a sustainable tourism destination.
The project’s owners said they intend to position Calderitas as a site with international appeal, offering a combination of luxury accommodations, spiritual experiences, and economic integration with the local community.
Luis Christian Escutia Sánchez, owner of Glamping Horizonte Maya, described the development as “a disruptive hospitality concept” that focuses on wellness and reconnection.
“This hotel offering is presented as a disruptive hospitality concept, based on geodesic structures that offer guests a relaxing experience with a purpose: healing, reconnecting, and renewing,” Escutia Sánchez said.
The accommodation features dome-shaped units constructed with geodesic designs and incorporates minerals such as quartz, which have been selected with specific spiritual purposes.
The project also emphasizes sustainable recreation, with plans to use electric jet skis, miniboats, and eco-friendly surfboards that allow visitors to explore the area without negatively impacting the local ecosystem.
The initiative complements broader government efforts to revitalize Calderitas.
In June, the Quintana Roo state government announced a separate public investment of nearly 43 million pesos to develop tourism infrastructure in the town, including the construction of four scenic viewpoints designed to enhance the area’s appeal and stimulate economic activity.
In terms of local impact, Glamping Horizonte Maya currently supports at least 18 direct jobs, all filled by residents of Calderitas.
Additionally, the facility plans to serve as a venue for local bazaars, yoga sessions, spiritual retreats, and other community events, offering opportunities for nearby entrepreneurs to engage with visitors and benefit from increased tourism.
According to The Yucatan Times, the opening ceremony will take place at 3:00 PM on August 8 and will feature appearances by rapper Konan Big, known from Cartel de Santa, and influencer Kevyn.
For outdoor hospitality professionals, this launch reflects a growing trend of integrating high-end, wellness-focused experiences with sustainable tourism infrastructure.
The project demonstrates how glamping can serve both as an economic development tool and as a platform for broader community engagement, offering lessons in combining ecotourism, local employment, and alternative recreational models in emerging destinations.
