Wood Design Park has announced plans to open a new outdoor resort, Wood Design Park Kyoto -Aya-, in Kyotanabe City, Kyoto Prefecture, with operations scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026.

The project involves the redevelopment of the existing Kyotanabe City Outdoor Activity Center, previously known as Ryuo Children’s Kingdom, which ceased operations last March.

Construction on the new facility is slated to begin in May and is anticipated to be completed by March 2026. Reservations are projected to open around December.

Spanning approximately 39,700 square meters, the development aims to repurpose and expand the current 13,200-square-meter site with an additional 26,500 square meters of maintained and utilized space.

According to AMP Media, the park is being positioned as an “experiential park where you can stay,” with a mix of accommodation options including five villas, eight hostel rooms, and campsite areas.

Planned amenities include an all-weather BBQ structure, an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven, a woodworking activity space, cycling paths, an outdoor sauna, and an observatory.

The operator, Wood Design Park, describes the concept as “a new outdoor experience that harmonizes nature and the city,” emphasizing the site’s convenient location with access from Kyoto City, Osaka Prefecture, and Nara Prefecture.

The project also seeks to align with principles of sustainable tourism and community development through the use of local resources.

Supporting infrastructure will include a two-story reinforced concrete administration building, a steel-frame BBQ site with some wooden components, a training building, and various support facilities such as an outdoor toilet and processing plant.

For outdoor hospitality business owners, this development offers a case study in adaptive reuse of municipal land for commercial outdoor recreation.

The use of local materials, emphasis on sustainability, and multi-use facilities may serve as a model for businesses seeking to expand into or evolve within urban-adjacent outdoor tourism spaces.
