Wyoming State Parks Recorded 5.3 Million Visitors in 2023

Wyoming’s state parks and historic sites celebrated a remarkable milestone in 2023, welcoming 5.3 million visitors—the second-highest visitation on record. This represents an increase of approximately 54,000 visitors from the previous year, showcasing the growing appeal of the state’s natural and cultural attractions.

The visitation figures for 2023 were surpassed only by those recorded during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. Despite the gradual return to normalcy, the appeal of Wyoming’s state parks is evident in the 1.03% increase from 2022 and 2.1% above the five-year average.

This sustained interest reflects the ongoing efforts to enhance visitor experiences and preserve the state’s natural wonders, such as improved trail maintenance and expanded interpretive programs.

Among the individual parks, Hot Springs State Park emerged as the leader in overall visitation, welcoming more than 1.5 million visitors in 2023. The success of Hot Springs State Park is mirrored across the state, with nine out of 15 state parks and 13 of 16 historic sites experiencing increased visitation compared to the previous year.

Implementing infrastructure improvements has contributed significantly to the continued growth in park visitation. These enhancements provide better facilities and more engaging experiences for visitors while preserving the natural integrity of the parks. The expansion of recreational and educational programs has also played a crucial role in attracting visitors to Wyoming’s state parks.

According to an article published by SVI News, Patrick Harrington, manager of the Wyoming Office of Outdoor Recreation, stated, “Wyoming’s outdoor recreation and tourism economies continue to play a critical role in the state’s economic vitality and quality of life of our residents and visitors. We are fortunate to live in a state that recognizes these benefits and that continues to inspire folks from around the world to experience and enjoy Wyoming’s great outdoors.”
