The Fountain of Youth RV Park in Thermopolis, Wyoming, a historic destination for travelers, is undergoing restoration. Terry Bane, the park’s new owner, visited the park as a child and is now working with her family to restore the iconic site. The RV park, known for its large outdoor mineral pool, has been a destination for road-trippers.
Originally a destination for families, the park’s once-grand pool is heated by 1.3 million gallons of hot mineral water from the Sacajawea fountain, creating an idyllic setting. However, the park’s condition has declined over the years, prompting Bane and her husband, David, to begin renovations.
Bane, reminiscing about her childhood visits to the park, aims to recreate those magical for new generations.
“It was just enchanting to me. Back then, there was a mermaid statue, and it was a cool thing to go get in the hot pool. There was always the steam that rose off of it. It was pretty magical,” Bane explained, as reported by Cowboy State Daily.
The restoration project is significant, with extensive work needed to repair the park’s aging facilities. Bane’s son, Tristan Painter, who now manages the park, shared his mother’s enthusiasm for the project. He has noted the community support and interest from guests, many of whom return year after year. The family’s goal is to restore the park’s beauty and revive its reputation as a place for RV travelers.
The history of the Fountain of Youth RV Park dates back to 1918 when a failed attempt to drill for oil led to the discovery of hot mineral water. Over time, the site became known as a health destination, attracting visitors seeking the benefits of the natural hot springs. Oscar and Etta Payne, who purchased the property in the 1960s, developed the RV park and turned it into a popular spot for tourists.
The renovation work includes upgrading the RV spaces, electrical systems, and water infrastructure. According to Painter, the improvements are part of a larger effort to restore the park’s charm and ensure it can accommodate modern travelers.
One of the main attractions of the park, the hot mineral pool, is being restored. The pool has been cleaned of algae, and new edging and sidewalks are being installed around it. The park’s bathrooms and showers have also been updated.
