Bear Creek Lake State Park, a cherished natural retreat in central Virginia, is set to host its 9th annual “Lights at the Lake” event. This festive occasion, a highlight in the region’s holiday calendar, promises to transform the park into a luminous wonderland, offering a unique experience for outdoor enthusiasts and families alike.
Scheduled over two consecutive weekends, December 1-3 and December 8-10, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the event invites visitors to drive through the park’s campground and beach area. This area will be adorned with an array of lights and community displays, creating a magical atmosphere in the heart of the Cumberland State Forest.
The “Lights at the Lake” event, conceived and spearheaded by the Friends of Bear Creek Lake State Park, has grown significantly over the years. Joey Dayton, the Park Manager, emphasized the event’s role in uniting friends, families, and the community. He noted its evolution into one of the region’s most extensive light displays.
Adding to the holiday spirit, Santa Claus will be present, giving out free candy canes and coloring books to the younger visitors. This feature of the event underscores the park’s commitment to family-friendly experiences, enhancing its appeal as a destination for holiday outings.
Admission to the event is either a new, unwrapped toy or a monetary donation. These contributions will benefit the Cumberland Christmas Mother, a local initiative supporting families during the holiday season. This charitable aspect of the event highlights the park’s engagement with and support for the surrounding community.
The event also offers additional activities to enrich the visitor experience. These include s’mores kits, a warming campfire, and a free ornament craft station, all of which are designed to enhance the festive atmosphere and provide memorable experiences for visitors of all ages.
The Lakeside Snack Bar will be open for the duration of the event, offering light fare and seasonal merchandise. This provides an opportunity for visitors to enjoy a meal or snack while participating in the festivities, further adding to the event’s appeal.
