THOR Industries, a recreational vehicle (RV) manufacturing company, has collaborated with electric vehicle (EV) specialist Harbinger to unveil the “world’s first hybrid Class A motorhome.” The vehicle, known as the THOR Test Vehicle, combines an electric platform with a low-emission gasoline range extender, offering a driving range of up to 500 miles.
The hybrid RV is expected to be available commercially in 2025 under the THOR family of brands.
The vehicle, designed on Harbinger’s custom electric platform, features a 140-kWh battery that can be charged through a DC fast charger, solar power, and traditional campsites. With its advanced technology and reduced emissions, the hybrid RV is projected to meet the California Air Resources Board’s Near-Zero Emission Vehicle (NZEV) standards under the Advanced Clean Truck legislation.
THOR Industries CEO Bob Martin emphasized the significance of electrification for the future of RVing. “Electrification will play a central role in the future of mobility, including RVing,” said THOR Industries President and CEO Bob Martin. “This first-of-its-kind hybrid platform and our ongoing collaboration with Harbinger are reinforcing THOR’s leadership in this segment and creating major points of product differentiation for our family of companies.”
The THOR Test Vehicle’s electric chassis, built exclusively for Class A motorhomes, provides torque and acceleration, which is particularly beneficial for navigating mountain roads and uneven terrain.
Powered by a dual-source system, an electric battery, and a gasoline range extender, the hybrid motorhome allows for off-grid camping while maintaining power reserves. Additionally, the RV’s ability to charge from multiple sources, including solar panels, further enhances its off-grid capability.
Beyond powertrain innovations, the motorhome offers advanced safety and performance features. Harbinger’s chassis integrates essential electric vehicle systems, such as the drivetrain, steering, and braking, into a robust, double-wishbone front suspension. Equipped with a steer-by-wire system and an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), the hybrid platform ensures a smooth and safe ride, even for a large Class A motorhome.
According to a press release, Harbinger CEO John Harris highlighted the importance of this partnership in advancing the RV sector. “Our collaboration with THOR and their family of companies allows us to help advance the RV sector and lay the groundwork for products that will enhance the RVing experience,” Harris said.
This innovation will be available for dealer test drives at the Elkhart Dealer Open House starting September 23.
