The Dyrt Report Shows RVs and Trailers Remain Most Popular Camping Options in 2025

The majority of U.S. campers continued to favor RVs and trailers in 2025, according to The Dyrt, a camping app built by the country’s largest RVing and camping community.

More than half of campers, 52.2%, reported taking at least one adventure in an RV or trailer last year.

The findings come from the 2026 Camping Report Presented by Toyota Trucks, which draws on surveys of thousands of The Dyrt Community members, a representative sample of U.S. residents, and camping property managers across all 50 states.

The trend is reflected in the private camping sector. One in five private properties added sites in 2025 for camping types they already offered, with 51.6% of those expansions devoted to RV sites. Tent sites were the next-most added category at 27.4%, followed by glampsites at 21%.

“I took my pop-up trailer to dispersed camping in the Sequoia National Forest with my wife and two young daughters,” said Trevor J., a camper from California. “We arrived on Monday hoping we would camp through Friday, depending on the site and how my daughters were doing. We found an amazing site thanks to The Dyrt and the girls did great, so we extended our stay all the way through Sunday. Best week I’ve had in a long time.”

Age was a significant factor in RV and trailer usage. Only 21% of campers 34 and younger reported using an RV or trailer in 2025. That rate rose to 38% among campers 35 to 44, 47% for ages 45 to 54, 55% for 55 to 64, and 64% for those 65 and older.

According to a press release, The Dyrt CEO Kevin Long said his own experience transitioning from traditional tent camping to a camper van shaped his perspective on the trend.

“To be able to explore the country and stay at different campgrounds while also running The Dyrt in the midst of the camping boom was an amazing experience. It’s easy to see why RVs and trailers went from the fastest-growing type of camping to the most popular in just a few years,” he said.

In addition to survey findings, The Dyrt announced plans to distribute $500,000 worth of PRO camping apps at RV shows nationwide in 2026. Attendees will receive one year free of The Dyrt PRO with every admission ticket purchased, a $59 value.

The report also found that one in four private properties enforce an RV age restriction, with the average maximum RV age capped at 13.8 years. BIPOC campers reported a 60% increase in using camper vans from 2024 to 2025.
