Polydrops Launches P21: A Fully Electric Trailer for Off-Grid Living

Polydrops, an electric RV startup, launched the P21, which the company claims to be the “world’s most energy-efficient travel trailer.” Set for production in October 2024, the P21 is designed as a fully electric, four-person trailer that reimagines off-grid living, offering extended off-grid capabilities without sacrificing comfort or functionality.

The P21 is engineered to focus on aerodynamic efficiency. Polydrops Founder Kyunghyun Lew explained the design philosophy, stating, “Rather than adding expensive, heavy, and complex propulsion systems to our trailers, we’ve focused relentlessly on aerodynamic efficiency.”

This allows electric vehicles to tow a Polydrops trailer without significant range loss, at a much lower total cost of ownership. Our design philosophy prioritizes ease of use, eliminating the need for separate charging systems or additional maintenance. We’re confident that as the EV market evolves, our streamlined approach will prove to be the most practical and cost-effective solution for eco-conscious travelers,” Lew said.

Built with a lightweight, sustainable aluminum frame, the P21 is equipped with a Timbren independent suspension system, enhancing maneuverability and ride comfort on a variety of terrains. The rust-resistant frame and aerodynamic design also maximize efficiency, as demonstrated by a Tesla Model Y Long Range, which achieved 240 miles on a single charge while towing the P21 during testing.

Another feature of the P21 is its 1300W integrated solar array, developed in collaboration with solar EV company Aptera. This solar array powers the trailer’s advanced off-grid climate control system, which includes a 12000BTU A/C and heat pump. The system ensures consistent temperature control, making the P21 an option for remote and off-grid living without reliance on external power sources.

Internally, the P21 boasts its architectural design, with six windows placed to provide natural light and encourage cross-ventilation. The windows, alongside layered lighting elements, create a connection to the outdoors while maintaining a modern, serene living space. The interior features a galley kitchen, a workspace, and sleeping arrangements for four.

The P21’s cabin is also constructed with zero thermal bridge insulation, resulting in up to five times better thermal performance than comparable trailers.

“By focusing on energy production, conservation, and efficient utilization, we’ve created a travel trailer that can serve as a true home away from home,” Lew noted.

Pricing for the P21 starts at $38,900.
