County Approves Re-Zoning for Brown Park and Campground to Enhance Outdoor Recreation

Lincoln County commissioners approved a re-zoning request for the Barbara S. and Walter F. Brown Memorial Park and Campground. Situated at milepost 13.6 on the Siletz Highway (Highway 229), Brown Park encompasses 62 acres with 3,500 feet of river frontage and currently features 19 primitive campsites.

According to an article published by Lincoln County Leader, Kelly Perry, Lincoln County Parks operations supervisor, addressed the commissioners about the necessity of this re-zoning. “The public’s desire for outdoor recreation and connecting with nature has never been higher,” she stated.

The park is accessible through Strome Park, making it a convenient location for outdoor enthusiasts seeking to connect with nature. This decision aligns with incorporating the Brown Park Master Plan into the Lincoln County Comprehensive Plan, marking a significant step toward enhancing recreational opportunities in the area.

Perry outlined three primary goals for Brown Park’s development: access, restoration, and functionality. She emphasized the need to create an inclusive space welcoming diverse visitors. “We aim to create an inclusive, accessible space that welcomes a wide variety of visitors to experience nature,” she said.

The restoration of the park will focus on enhancing its ecological functions. Perry explained that active measures will be taken to protect the environment by thinning plantation areas, increasing native tree diversity, and controlling invasive species.

Barbara S. and Walter F. Brown Memorial Park and Campground is situated along the Siletz River, featuring a river frontage. This nearly 62-acre park is part of a reforested homestead farm and is conveniently located on State Highway 229 at mile marker 13.6. The park is adjacent to Strome Landing Park, which offers boat ramps for easy access to the river.

Strome Park, also located on the Siletz River, is positioned near the upper tidal area, where the tidal effects can be observed daily. The park features a boat ramp that remains accessible at all river heights. The park offers an expanded boat trailer parking area, concrete vault restrooms, and convenient river access.
