Wayne National Forest (WNF) in Ohio, a natural reserve located in Pedro, is set to welcome visitors for the 2024 recreation season starting April 12, according to an Ironton Tribute report.
This announcement shows the annual reopening of the forest’s campgrounds and recreation sites, including both motorized and non-motorized trails, offering a variety of outdoor activities to enthusiasts. Big Bend Beach is an exception to this schedule, with its reopening slated for May 25.
Ironton Ranger District of WNF has listed several sites that will be accessible starting April 12, enhancing the outdoor experience for visitors. These sites include Oak Hill Campground, Iron Ridge Campground, Pine Knob Campground, and Paddle Creek Horse Campground, which remain open throughout the year. Additionally, the Two-Point Group Campground and Furnace Group Picnic Shelter, along with the Roadside Group Picnic Shelter, are part of the reopening.
All sites within the Ironton Ranger District, except Big Bend Beach and Paddle Creek Horse Campground, require reservations, which can be made through the official website, recreation.gov. The remaining campgrounds are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
For those seeking a more rugged outdoor experience, dispersed (primitive) camping is permitted across the majority of the general forest area, barring specific prohibited zones.
Starting March 25, visitors interested in utilizing the motorized trails can purchase their trail passes. These are available at any WNF office, through 12 participating vendor locations, or online at the Wayne National Forest Motorized Trail Pass section. This system facilitates access to the trails and contributes to the maintenance and preservation of the forest’s natural resources.
Wayne National Forest, sprawling across the Appalachian foothills of southeastern Ohio, encompasses over a quarter million acres of public land. This vast expanse is managed from two Ranger District offices located in Nelsonville and Ironton, with an additional field office in Marietta.
