North Dakota Launches Office of Outdoor Recreation to Boost Economy and Enhance Quality of Life

In a significant development for outdoor enthusiasts and the state economy, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has announced the creation of the state’s first Office of Outdoor Recreation.

The announcement was made at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, marking a strategic move to enhance North Dakota’s economic growth, workforce recruitment, and preservation of natural heritage.

The establishment of this office places North Dakota as the 22nd state in the United States to form such an entity, emphasizing the growing importance of the outdoor sector in state economies, as per the News & Insights report of the RV Industry Association.

Governor Burgum’s announcement follows his participation in the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable’s National Outdoor Recreation Executive Forum held in Washington, D.C., reflecting a coordinated effort to expand the outdoor recreation sector nationwide.

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, outdoor recreation contributes $1.3 billion to North Dakota’s economy, accounting for 1.8% of the state’s GDP and supporting 13,615 jobs. This sector not only plays a crucial role in the state’s economic framework but also in promoting healthy lifestyles and connecting people with nature.

The Office of Outdoor Recreation will focus on maximizing the potential of North Dakota’s vast natural landscapes to attract tourists and new residents, while ensuring the sustainability of its natural resources

Jessica Wahl Turner, president of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR), praised Governor Burgum’s initiative, highlighting the office’s potential to act as a catalyst for growth and innovation in the state’s outdoor recreation industry.

Governor Burgum expressed enthusiasm about the new office, stating, “This new office will allow us to better coordinate with stakeholders and state agencies as they develop plans, strategies, and initiatives to maximize the impact of outdoor recreation in North Dakota.”

His administration aims to use this office to boost economic development, create jobs, and enhance the state’s appeal as a prime destination for outdoor activities.

The move has also received support from national figures such as Katherine Andrews, director of the Arkansas Office of Outdoor Recreation and chair of the Confluence of States.

Andrews commended the establishment of the North Dakota office, noting the positive impacts of similar initiatives in other states and expressing eagerness to collaborate on advancing the outdoor recreation agenda.

The ORR supports the establishment of state offices like North Dakota’s through access to data, resources, and communications tools, which are vital for the growth of the recreation sector. More information about the Roundtable’s support for state initiatives can be found on their website.

As North Dakota’s Office of Outdoor Recreation begins its operations, it promises to enhance the quality of life for its residents and position the state as a leader in sustainable outdoor recreational activities. The community and stakeholders eagerly anticipate the new opportunities and benefits that this focused approach to outdoor recreation will bring.
