The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced the launch of the ‘Love Our New York Lands’ photo contest, themed ‘Accessible Recreation,’ on the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
This initiative aims to highlight efforts in “removing barriers to public lands for New Yorkers of all ages and abilities.” The contest encourages participants to capture images showcasing inclusive outdoor experiences across the state.
Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar stated that the DEC supports the Americans with Disabilities Act and is continually working to make public lands more accessible for visitors.
“I encourage everyone to check out the many DEC recreation features on the new Accessible Recreation Destinations Map and throughout the DEC website. Plan your next adventure or relaxing escape to nature and send us your pictures of welcoming all ages and abilities to share the outdoors,” Mahar explained.
According to a press release, winning entries will be featured in statewide digital and print campaigns. These campaigns aim to increase awareness of principles that promote “safe, accessible, respectful, and sustainable use of public lands.”
Each ‘Love Our New York Lands’ contest will feature a unique theme. The theme for August is “Accessible Recreation,” focusing on participation in activities such as camping, picnicking, fishing, boating, hiking, nature viewing, and other recreational opportunities for New Yorkers with disabilities and people of all ages and abilities.
Three winning photos will be selected, showcasing creative shots of the public enjoying these activities at accessible recreation sites across New York State. Entries will be judged based on originality, artistic composition, technical quality, and how well they showcase inclusive participation in New York’s outdoor activities. Photo submissions should be emailed by August 31.
In addition to the photo contest, DEC introduced several new programs and resources. The Accessible Recreation Map is an interactive tool designed to showcase wheelchair-accessible features at various DEC facilities, including education centers, campgrounds, day-use areas, waterway access sites, and trails. This map represents part of a broader $5 million investment in recreation upgrades aimed at enhancing accessibility across the state.
DEC also launched a Mobility Device Reservation Pilot Program at the Camp Santanoni Historic Area in Newcomb, Essex County. The pilot program allows qualified individuals with disabilities to reserve and use electrically powered wheelchair devices free of charge, further expanding access to this historic site.
