U.S. Light Energy wants to transform what was the Tee Bird South Golf Course in Saratoga County, New York into a 10-megawatt solar farm. It could also include single-family homes, a campground, a community garden, and a data center.
According to a report, the Latham solar power development company is asking the town for approval of a planned unit development to extend the use of the 203.5-acre property on Route 197 within Moreau. The course was closed in 2011, and the current zoning only permits agricultural and residential uses.
U.S. Light Energy has approximately eight community solar development initiatives currently in operation that generate around 35 megawatts of electricity sufficient to power 3,500 to 5,000 homes. Nearly a dozen projects are now being developed, and the company anticipates 60 megawatts of solar power operating.
Town zoning restricts solar power development to areas designated for industrial use unless the applicant is granted a planned unit development approval by the town.
A few years back, Moreau officials considered amending laws to allow solar power projects on farmland but ultimately abandoned the idea after residents disagreed on the issue.
The town board has requested the planning board to look over U.S. Light Energy’s application and then make a recommendation.
