Sherman Reservoir State Recreation Area Unveils New Campground

As Nebraska continues to bolster its reputation as an outdoor destination, Sherman Reservoir State Recreation Area is leading the way with its newly expanded Middle Ridge Campground set to partially open on July 17.

The expansion marks a significant milestone in Nebraska’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its public outdoor spaces.

The revamped campground, a merger of the former Middle Ridge Campground and Thunder Bay Campground, now boasts a total of 61 electrical pads, complete with 50/30-amp connections. Campers will have the convenience of a first-come, first-served policy at the campsite.

Part of the expansion plan also ensures that accessibility and inclusivity are at the forefront of its design. The upgraded campground includes four sites that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, allowing all outdoor lovers, irrespective of their abilities, to enjoy Nebraska’s bountiful natural beauty.

The improvements at Sherman Reservoir State Recreation Area come as part of Nebraska’s broader goal to enhance its outdoor recreation facilities, as the region increasingly becomes a sought-after destination for local and out-of-state campers, hikers, and boaters. These improvements hold a mirror to Nebraska’s firm belief in the importance of accessible outdoor recreation, especially in the context of its economic and societal value.

Regional park Superintendent, Tommy Hicks, in sharing his excitement about the expansion, stated, “This is a great addition for our North Central parks region and will provide a new, long-overdue camping experience at Sherman Reservoir.

While some campsites will be immediately available from July 17, others are scheduled to open later in the fall.

The phased opening is part of an environmentally-conscious effort to allow sufficient grass growth to prevent soil erosion, demonstrating Nebraska’s commitment to balancing development with sustainable practices.

The expansion project was primarily funded by the Nebraska Capital Maintenance Fund. This fund was created by the Nebraska Legislature in 2016 to preserve public outdoor recreation facilities and parklands. Additionally, funds generated from user fees of the Nebraska Game and Parks’ state park system have been instrumental in supporting the project.

This initiative is part of a more extensive series of upgrades that Sherman Reservoir State Recreation Area has witnessed in recent years. The inclusion of new boat docks, the addition of concrete vault toilets, and an upgraded fish-cleaning station are evidence of Nebraska’s continuous efforts to improve the outdoor experience for all visitors.

Sherman Reservoir SRA is situated just 7 miles east of Loup City and is a hub of outdoor opportunities, boasting a 2,845-acre lake. The park is an ideal locale for various outdoor activities, including fishing, boating, hunting, and more.
