Hernando Point Campground to Reopen June 14

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District unveiled the scheduled reopening of Hernando Point Campground at Arkabutla Lake in Mississippi for June 14, according to a Vicksburg Daily News report.

The campground, nestled along the picturesque Arkabutla Lake and Dam in the rolling hills of northwest Mississippi, offers a serene getaway into nature. The campground itself is positioned on the waterfront, surrounded by lush forests of oak, hickory, beech, sweet gum, and birch trees, offering a tranquil setting for visitors.

Upon its reopening, the campground will initially make 35 campsites available to the public, with plans to open the remaining sites by July 1. Those interested in securing a spot at this location can make reservations here.

Hernando Point Campground is designed to offer visitors a range of recreational activities and amenities, including access to a playground, pavilion, and swimming area, aiming to provide a memorable outdoor experience.

According to the report, a recent period of closure also allowed for significant cleanup and rehabilitation efforts following an EF-1 tornado in January 2020, which resulted in considerable damage to the area. These efforts included the removal of damaged trees and debris, aimed at restoring the campground to its pre-damage condition.

The area is a haven for families and outdoor lovers who flock to Arkabutla Lake to indulge in a variety of activities such as fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, and biking. The lake’s clear waters and abundant green spaces create an ideal environment for these recreational activities.

Arkabutla Lake is a prime fishing destination, attracting thousands of anglers each year. The lake’s waters are teeming with species native to Mississippi.

Beyond the natural beauty and recreational activities, Hernando Point Recreation Area is equipped with a range of amenities to enhance the camping experience. Facilities include a playground, showers, and hookups for electricity, water, and sewer, ensuring comfort and convenience for visitors.

Additionally, nearby attractions such as The Lost Indian Spring Disc Golf Course and the Senatobia Wetlands project offer further opportunities for leisure and learning, making Hernando Point a destination for those seeking to immerse in outdoor adventures and natural beauty.
