Starting January 27, Mabel Lake Campground in Minnesota’s Chippewa National Forest will transition to a new reservation system, according to a Forest Service announcement.
The campground will offer 10 sites through Recreation.gov for advanced booking, while maintaining another 10 sites for first-come, first-served camping, with one additional site reserved for the campground host.
Located 26 miles east of Walker, on Highway 200, the campground provides visitors with vault toilets and drinking water access. Each site comes equipped with standard Forest Service amenities, and campers can enjoy activities including boating, swimming, and fishing on Mabel Lake.
According to its website, Mabel Lake Campground offers a serene escape for camping enthusiasts, featuring campsites nestled along a sandy beach. The campground is surrounded by a lush forest with wildlife, providing visitors with opportunities to observe eagles, osprey, and various waterfowl.
For those planning to visit, the campground charges a use fee of $14 per night.
The nearby North Country Trail and Boy River enhance the camping experience, offering paddling options and scenic views. Each campsite is equipped with essential amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, and access to potable water, making it suitable for both tent and RV camping.
Other campgrounds are also present at Chippewa National Forest. Webster Lake Campground, situated ten miles south of Blackduck, is set to open for the season on May 9, and will remain accessible until October 14. The campground features 15 sites, all of which are accessible to visitors with disabilities.
Campers can enjoy a variety of amenities, including a picnic area and a boat launch, providing easy access to the scenic Webster Lake. The area also boasts a large trail system for hiking enthusiasts.
In addition to Webster Lake Campground, Stony Point Campground is undergoing construction projects starting in August to enhance the visitor experience. This campground offers 44 campsites surrounded by a lush old-growth forest featuring trees over 200 years old.
Amenities at Stony Point include developed boat access, two boat harbors, a swimming beach, and picnic areas, along with electricity and shower facilities.
